2000 Air Bag Storage Tray Instructions I used "Moe's writeup " for his 2001 as a guide, but found there were a few differences with my 2000 vs. his 2001. The main difference is that the fifth screw for the console on a 2000 is under the ash tray, not under the windows switch. Also, at the top of the surround there are two clips on a 2000 and only one on a 2001. I also didn't want to keep my AB switch assembly, so I needed a slight change there. OK, here's how to do it on a 2000: Remove the 5 screws on the console, two in the storage area, two on the front end under plastic caps and one under the ash tray. It's pretty much loose then except for two clips at the radio end, pull straight up on that end with medium pressure and it will pop straight up. Tip the console on it's side and unplug the cable from the windows switches. Remove the console with the switches still installed and set it aside. Remove the two screws on the bottom of the surround. Use a springhook or similiar tool to insert between the surround and the clips. Start on the bottom by the AC controls and work your way up to the top of the surround. With the tool installed and hooked behind the surround, pull straight back until the clip releases. Repeat this for the rest of the clips. To make life easier, remove the plugs from the AB switch and the lighter and then pop the AB switch out and replace it with the storage tray. I also got mine from "CORKSPORT's Web Site " for $12 plus shipping. Basicly your now done, figure out where you want to stick the AB switch assy. and re-assemble everything. This section is optional. I didn't want to go thru the hassle of re-locating the AB switch, but you just can't leave it out because the SAS computer is checking to see if the OFF bulb is burned out. If it dosen't detect the bulb it gets a DTC 49 error. Error 49 says there's no voltage on pin V of SAS control module (the OFF light), but what it really means is that the bulb isn't there (or burned out). Anyway, you need to add a 10 ohm, 1 watt resistor (Radio Shack part number 271-151A) into the female end of the AB plug. It should jumper between the LIGHT GREEN and BLACK & YELLOW wires. The resistor can be pre-bent and covered with tape or insulated tubing and it will just push into the connector's female pins. This supplies the required voltage to the SAS module so it thinks the AB switch is still there. The ON position of the AB switch is an open to the SAS module, so without the AB switch installed, the passanger air bag is active. Put the jumpered AB plug back and reinstall everything you removed. Keep in mind that if you are doing this to something other than a 2000, the wire colors may be different. However, you can look at the back of the AB switch and figure out what color wires will work for you. You need the wires that go to the OFF bulb. The OFF bulb is the larger of the two. The small bulb is part of the dash illumination wiring. |
